I make the way something is built carry its aesthetic, without ornament, so that what is built is what is seen: as in the sculptures I designed and built for Michael Sailstorfer, cast in bronze and painted exactly as I had built them.

Decorum

Germinating since 2018, in Studio Michael Sailstorfer Applied in 1 work, 2018

In my practice, decorum is this: the construction process, when it is well applied, becomes the primary aesthetic of the work, without ornament.

“In a bridge, the engineering decision of how to carry the load is what ends up defining how it looks, without ornament.”

The research question

When does the way something is built become the way it looks?

I Cardboard and tape · 2018

In 2018 Michael Sailstorfer engaged me as a freelance designer. I designed and built a series of sculptures for several of his exhibitions: full-scale originals in corrugated cardboard and tape, from which the casts were made.

II What the casting had to keep · 2018

“When Michael Sailstorfer saw how I was using the tape, he realised that my way of using it brought expression to the piece, and that it should not be lost after the casting.”

The decision followed: the final bronzes were painted hyper-realistically, to show exactly what I had built. The pieces were shown in his exhibition Brainspotting, at Avlskarl Gallery, Copenhagen, 2018.
