I design the difference between drawing and site in advance, joints, tolerances, swell and real lead times, so that a piece fits where it goes and a schedule holds on site.

Process 06 of ten

1 ≠ 1

Germinating since 2020, in Rialengo No.4 Applied in 6 works, 2020–2026 Today: Construction Documents Engine, Operations Platform, Site Control

What is built never measures exactly what is drawn. Joints, tolerances and the swell of the construction process are designed from the drawing, so that nothing surprises on site.

“A piece of 480 cm does not fit an opening of 480 cm once it is built.”

The research question

How much does a piece grow between the drawing and the site, and who designs that difference?

My principle

I always take it into account in my designs: the swell of the construction process, so that there are no surprises on site when, for example, a piece of 480 cm does not fit an opening of 480 cm once it is built. There is a theory about this process called 1 ≠ 1, explained with the example of a cubic metre of earth dug out of a site, which does not fit back into the same hole.

I Drawn at 4.8 m, built at 5 m · 2020

“It ended up at 5 m because of the swell of the material.”

Rialengo No.4 was drawn as two halves of 2.4 m. Screwing and gluing always leave a minimum gap between the layers, and across 480 layers that gap added 20 cm: 4.8 m drawn, 5 m built, +4 %. The design allowed for it.

II 1 ≠ 1 in time · 2026

The same rule holds for time. At a holiday villa, the expense record, payment by payment, measured suppliers' real lead times; those measures went into the works programme of a house remodelling in Santo Domingo, where the existing house never measured what its plans said.

What you can hire today

The difference between drawing and site, designed before it is built. My Construction Documents Engine cuts every bar to length, optimises board usage room by room and tabulates the waste. My Operations Platform calculates status instead of letting anyone type it. My Site Control, in development, is written to prevent the error that comes next on a site: paying for work covered before it was inspected, and then the pour, until it is released.
